Festival de Diablos Y Congos, the festival of demons and slaves, is one of the most prominent festivals celebrated in Portobelo, Panama. The place holds utmost importance in history and is witness to some of the very cruel acts of slavery that the African-American land had to suffer from the Spanish. The festival is celebrated to remind the people of the painful past of slavery that their ancestors had gone through, but with a touch of humor and festivities.
The festival holds a lot of importance for the people of Portobelo, as it gives them a chance to relive the past and celebrate how they have conquered and won their freedom from the Spanish. During the festival, people dress up as slaves and mockingly take up a prisoner and ask for a huge ransom but is freed even on paying a token. The streets are full of colorfully dressed people, singing and dancing to the traditional tunes and mocking away the painful life their ancestors had lived.
